A veteran and father of four, Max found himself in a messy custody battle with the estranged mother of his children while at the same time struggling to keep his housing amidst rising court fees. Max was at risk of losing his housing voucher when he was referred to Families Forward by the Strong Families Strong Children Collaborative. Not only was Max fighting for sole custody of his four children, he was also unable to continue operating his small business, due to COVID. With the assistance of a Families Forward Housing Resource Specialist, Max was able keep his housing voucher and remain in his rental home, stabilizing the family’s housing situation.
Max was also provided services with a Families Forward Career Coach, who helped Max achieve his goal of returning to school full-time to pursue a degree using his GI Bill. A Families Forward Mental Health Counselor also worked with Max, helping him learn coping skills for his stress and anxiety. Max was able to regain self-sufficiency using the resources available to him as a veteran and through the help of his team of specialists at Families Forward. Max now has sole custody of his children and remains committed to finishing his degree so he can continue to provide safety and stability for his children.
